We are proud to announce our upcoming visit to the Archives at NCBS (National Centre for Biological Sciences, a research centre of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research). A ‘public collecting centre for the history of science in contemporary India’, the Archives at NCBS showcases the multi-layered stories of scientific research and practice in our country. Most importantly, the archives highlight science as a disciplinary practice not only shaping society but also as something shaped by complex sociocultural structures and processes. Following the tour of the archives, we will interact with Professor Gita Chadha, one of the pioneering scholars of feminist science studies (FSS) in India. We look forward to gaining from her insights on the interface of science and society, especially the question of how gender influences science and scientists in India. The event was conceived as a unique interdisciplinary collaboration between a ‘science’ department (Biotechnology) and a ‘humanities’ department (History) at MCC. We hope the visit will provide us with the exciting opportunity to understand science from a humanities perspective.
