FOUNDER OF THE COLLEGE

Mount Carmel College, Bengaluru, is owned and administered by the Carmelite Sisters of St Teresa (CSST). It is inspired by the teachings of Jesus Christ whose values were Love, Peace, Brotherhood/Sisterhood, Equality, Joy, and Service. As a minority institution, it continues to enjoy the rights and privileges guaranteed by the Indian Constitution. CSST was founded on 24 April 1887 by Mother Teresa of St Rose of Lima in the town of Ernakulum in Kerala.

Let’s take a moment and delve into the tale of this extraordinary institution pioneered by the birth of an extraordinary human being, Mary Grace. Born in Madras, South India, on 29 January 1858, her radical views and ideology opened up a new and glorious chapter for Indian women. As a woman of substance and perseverance, Mary Grace thought beyond her times and chose to take a leap of faith in the field of education. Her prowess, aptitude, and charismatic persona led to many significant achievements in the field of education. She used learning as a weapon and a tool that enabled girls to become leaders and strong, upright citizens who contributed to the evolution of society.

HISTORY OF COLLEGE

Mount Carmel College founded in 1944 by the Carmelite Sisters of St. Teresa in the state of Kerala in Trichur (under the title of Carmel College) affiliated to Madras University, broke new ground by shifting to Bangalore in the year 1948 to meet the increasing demand for women’s education.

Initially affiliated to Mysore University it later became an affiliated college of Bangalore University in 1964.  In largely uncharted waters this minority institution that was originally intended for Catholic students opened its doors to those of all castes, creeds, and communities, thereby fulfilling its mission of empowering women and equipping them with knowledge and strength of character, to transcend narrow concerns and work tirelessly towards the vision of a better and more egalitarian world. The college has grown and diversified over the years demonstrating its sensitivity to the ongoing global revolution.

An autonomous college since September 2005, Mount Carmel College was first accredited at the 5 Star Level in 1999, Re-accredited with an A+ in 2006, ‘A’ Grade in 2012 in its third round, and A+ in the 4th Cycle of Accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). In 2006 University Grants Commission identified the college as ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ (CPE). The Institution is consistently ranked among the top 20 colleges in India.

The college has well-established research facilities and state-of-the-art laboratories which facilitate research culture both among staff and students. Eight PG Departments have been recognized as research centres by Bangalore University and IGNOU.

The college has been registered with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) and is recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India (Act 1988) in the year 2011.

The college plays a crucial role in entrenching a strong value system. The faculty today makes optimum use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). It has made a conscious effort to invest in facilities, hardware, and state-of-the-art infrastructure and has made considerable advances in documentation and knowledge management.

In keeping pace with global changes the college has established a dynamic Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the teaching-learning process which has helped the institution in its quest for excellence with emphasis on national and holistic development to confront the changing global standards and realize the objectives of the National Knowledge Commission.
