Gandhian worldview: Looking Back to the Past to Engineer the Future
India and the world are in a state of flux. Rampant consumerism, unbridled nationalism, and penchant for parochial values are pulling the country down through a path that we had never traversed before. What happened to us? The same question was asked nearly a century ago. In the 1920s, our nation was hurtling down through the violent colonial drainpipe: regionalism, sectarianism, and ideologies worked overtime to keep us down. At a time when all hope was lost, there shone a light, a great soul. The Mahatma. He asked us to be peaceful in the face of violence, be silent when the world bays for our blood, and be steadfast in the face of opposition. His ideals defined the destiny of our nation and our nationhood. Today, those very ideals are questioned now. This was the subject of the conference organized on 26-27 November 2019 at Mount Carmel College, Bengaluru. “Gandhian Worldview: Looking back to engineer the future” was the theme of the conference, which was held to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of the Mahatma.
Participants at the event presented papers on the theme, and the two-day event included technical sessions and panel discussions on a range of additional subjects, such as: Gandhian principles and sustainable development; Ahimsa, a means of conflict resolution; Gandhi’s economic model vs. consumerism; Gandhi and religion; Gandhi and the Mahatma; Gandhi and political ideology; Gandhi through a feminist lens; Gandhi’s influence on world thought; and Building Social and Economic Health Through Gandhian Model Justice, Equality and Wellness.
Our nation, which was founded on Gandhian principles, is now at the crossroads of a moral dilemma: Whether we still require Gandhian thoughts or new political ideologies for the greater good. Does the concept of good, ideals, and nationhood keep changing with the times? How compatible is Gandhian simplicity with today’s consumerist world? There are numerous questions that continue to dog our thoughts. These questions will rise with every generation. For instance, it may seem incompatible to link Gandhism to Corporate Management and Technology, but the demands of the society are such that every conceivable thought or ideas are weighed, validated and embraced. In the end, we begin to question the very reality of the person behind the Mahatma and are comfortable to label it as a myth.
Today, even children are unable to imagine that the Mahatma existed. How could have such a person lived, they ask. In all this tumult trying to unravel the persona behind the Mahatma for the present and future, we run the risk of missing his message: His life.

Sustainable Agriculture: Challenges and Strategies
MCC’s National Conference on Sustainable Agriculture: Challenges and Strategies focused on decoding the Indian agricultural crisis and its impact. It further shed light upon the deficiencies in agricultural input deliveries, and measures to augment input delivery while discussing the role of technology in agriculture and radical strategies to build sustainable agriculture. We are proud to state that reputed Academicians, Researchers, Agriculturists, Bio Scientists, and Policy Makers participated in the conference to debate and deliberate on the challenges in Indian Agriculture. Feel free to scroll through a brief understanding of the National Conference and the ground-breaking points that it looked into!
2nd & 3rd December, 2019
Sustainable Agriculture Challenges and Strategies
Even as the economy grows, there has been a continuous decline in the contribution of agriculture to GDP. With most of the Indians living in rural areas and relying on agriculture for livelihood, the situation is quite alarming. A growing number of farmers commit suicide across the country. On the other hand, income levels in the urban centres seem only to be rising, giving fillip to consumption and demand. In other words, rural India is unable to provide for the consumption needs of the other India: rising demand for cereal crops, fruits, vegetables and milk outstrips production. We are staring at a very sorry state of food security scenario in the country.
When it comes to ensuring food safety with sustainable agriculture growth and practices, a lot of questions remain and grey areas abound, making it difficult for the policy makers to get a clear picture. To identify the emerging perspectives, the Department of Economics hosted a two-day national conference on the theme, “Sustainable Agriculture: Challenges and Strategies.”
Objectives of the conference included:
-
- Decoding the Indian agricultural crisis and its impact
- Analysing deficiencies in agricultural input deliveries, and measures to augment input delivery
- Discussing the role of technology in agriculture
- Strategies to build sustainable agriculture.
Academicians, researchers, agriculturists, bio scientists, policy makers participated in the conference, debating and deliberating on the challenges to Indian agriculture. Participants in the conference pointed to a slew of issues leading to the current plight in the farming sector: Policy paralysis, climate change, soil degradation and loss, fresh water concerns accompanied by falling ground water level, and declining biodiversity.
The unfolding farming crisis in India is much more than a mere agrarian crisis. The consequence of neglecting it will hit all the other sectors and the national economy in several ways. It should be noted that without sustainable practices in agriculture, there will be a sharp fall in areas under cultivation, production, etc. We should arrest this trend immediately. From being a food surplus nation to becoming a net importer of food, our fall has been drastic in the past few years. Efforts should be taken to making agriculture a profitable enterprise, backed by full governmental support and investment. It is high-time that the policy-makers realize that scientific practices in agriculture are given a push along with innovative food marketing and farming systems.

Know MoreGandhian worldview: Looking Back to the Past to Engineer the Future

Know MoreSustainable Agriculture Challenges and Strategies
