In a first, Mount Carmel College, Autonomous, (Women’s College) backed  by over 70 years of teaching experience, is offering four-year integrated programmes  B.A- B.Ed  and  B.Sc-B.Ed. from the academic year 2018-19. The programme is approved by NCTE and Government of  Karnataka.The programme is designed  according to UGC and NCTE guidelines to prepare quality  teachers for nation building.

The programme is affiliated to Bengaluru Central University.

MORE ABOUT THE COURSE:

For the first time, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), which monitors teacher training, has granted permission to two colleges in Bengaluru to initiate a four-year integrated B.A-B.Ed. and B.Sc-B.Ed. programmes under Section 14(3) (a) of the NCTE Act.1993. Mount Carmel College, Autonomous is one of them.

The course aims at integrating

  • general studies comprising Science leading to  (B.Sc-B.Ed), or Social science  leading to (B.A-B.Ed)
  • Professional studies comprising the foundation of education, pedagogy of school subjects, practicum related to tasks and functions of the teacher.
  • The course content maintains a balance between theory and practice, coherently integrating components of the programme, representing a wide knowledge base required for a secondary school teacher.

The four-year teacher training programme was earlier limited to the four Regional Colleges of Education (RIE). However, the present course which is modelled on similar guidelines, gives interested institutions an opportunity to initiate the programme.  The aim is to groom professionals early on and impart the required teaching skills.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

The programme is specially designed with an objective to develop an understanding of teaching-learning process at secondary school level among student educators. It focuses on enabling student-teachers to reflect critically on perspectives of education and integrate holistically the theory and practices to facilitate active engagement of learners for better learning and knowledge creation.

The  Integrated B.Ed. programme  focuses on

  • creating sensitivity about language diversity in classroom and its role in teaching-learning process,
  • developing an understanding of context of education in contemporary Indian Society,
  • appreciating the role of context and socio-political realities about learners in facilitating learning in inclusive settings,
  • student-teachers to integrate and apply ICT in facilitating teaching-learning process and in school management,
  • systematizing experiences and strengthening the professional competencies of student teachers,
  • enabling student-teachers to acquire necessary competencies for organizing learning experiences,
  • developing an understanding of paradigm shift in conceptualizing disciplinary knowledge in school curriculum,
  • identifying, challenging and overcoming gender inequalities in school, classroom, curricula, textbook, social institutions, etc.,
  • developing competencies among student-teachers to select and use appropriate assessment strategies for facilitating learning,
  • engaging student-teachers with self, child,  and school to establish close connections between different curricular areas,
  • providing first-hand experience of all the school activities through engaging student-teachers as interns in secondary/senior secondary schools.

B.Sc-B.Ed Programme

The  four-year Integrated B.Sc-B.Ed programme is based on Choice based credit system (CBCS) . The programme will be of four years duration organized based on semester scheme with two semesters in a year. It has been designed to impart theoretical knowledge and practical skills to students in different disciplines of Science (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology) and empower them with problem solving skills. At the end of  four years students complete their graduation  both  in Science and in Education .  It saves one year for the students.

The programme offers a wide range of electives to cater to the needs of student-educators. Enhancing professional Capacities (EPC) courses  are introduced for personality development and to provide knowledge of ICT.  Foundation, skill development and Interdisciplinary courses are part of the programme to enable student-educators to acquire  an all-round personality and  necessary skills of a secondary school teacher. The programme is bettered for practical adeptness with a twenty-week internship programme including four-week observation in schools to provide real experiences.

During these four years, the students get hands-on experience by observing real life classroom teaching and excelling in the same during their internship period. Functional English is taught to enhance the communication skills of the learners.

Eligibility:

The basic eligibility criteria for admission to these programmes is a pass in Pre-University examination of Karnataka/ CBSE Senior Secondary examination/ or an equivalent examination with 60% marks.

Candidates applying for B.Sc- B.Ed. programme must have studied all the three disciplinary subjects at the PUC /10+2 level.

B.A- B.Ed Programme

Integrated B.A- B.Ed. is a four-year undergraduate programme based on CBCS pattern.. The programme is  started with a vision to impart in-depth knowledge of different subjects of Humanities including Political Science,  History,  Geography Economics, Sociology,  Psychology as well as English and Hindi/Kannada languages to students along with their graduation in Education as well. The programme is designed according to NCTE guidelines to prepare qualitative future teachers for nation-building.

Flexibility is the essence of the programme which is achieved by offering various electives.
